Gene Poor Bear at Daniels Park

Traditional Lakota dancer, Gene Poor Bear, looks out across the Platte River valley from a ridge at Daniels Park, Colorado. His head gear, or roach, consists of eagle feathers, porcupine quills and deer hair. The rest of his outfit is a combination of furs, feathers and beads. His coup stick is tipped with the outstretched claws of an eagle.

On this particular night, Gene and I worked until well after sunset. As he danced, the sound of his bells and his soft chanting were mesmerizing. In that short session we created enough fascinating images that I've always had trouble choosing among them.

This image and others are available as archival prints.
